Description
Iran has vocally supported popular revolts in the Arab world, and, according to some reports, hopes that it, together with Turkey and post-Hosni Mubarak Egypt, will lead the region into economic then political integration. However, this support is contradicted by the Islamic republic's own regime under which the public does not have a big say in running their country's affairs, a Saudi analyst said March 20. "Iran takes from popular revolts in the Arab world a clearly ironic stance if compared to its regime's nature, including its composition, ideological standing and domestic policies," Khaled Dakheel wrote in the London-based daily AL HAYAT. "Iran welcomes Arab revolts and says it backs the public's right to take to the streets to achieve justice, equality and political participation," he added, recalling stances in this regard by almost all Iranian high-ranking officials.
